Description
Indigenous to eastern India, Dokra is a traditional non-ferrous metal casting technique whose origins lie within the Bronze Age (3000 – 1800 BCE). The famous Dancing Girl sculpture from Mohenjo-Daro is a classic example of ancient day Dokra Art of India. Artisans from West Bengal, Odisha & Chhattisgarh still practice this rare art form using lost wax thread method to produce varied pieces of art & jewellery which are loved nationally & internationally.
This particular Dokra Deer is made in Mayurbhanj District of Orissa. In fact the metalsmith tribes of Eastern India are scattered in West Bengal, Chattisgarh and Orissa. All are using same age-old process of vanishing wax thread but as a style each can be distinguished by their finish and expression. A wonderful metal craft heavy and unpolished. surely a pride possession for a collector.
